Aortic dissection, or acute aortic syndrome, is created when a false lumen opens through
a tear in the media of the vessel wall. This report of 2 cases emphasizes the great
electrocardiographic variability in the clinical presentation of this event, particularly
regarding atrioventricular block. The cases illustrate the different rhythm changes
observed during initial emergency department treatment of this condition. After the
episodes of atrioventricular block and initial treatment, a steady sinus rhythm was
achieved in both patients without resort to a pacemaker.
